Rusty As A kitten
Rusty came to live with us in the Summer of 1977. Rusty was adopted from the Huntley's of the Big Marsh. Little did Rusty know at the time, she would live in the lap of luxury until she died in 1989. Looking at the above picture, you would never think that Rusty would turn out to be the "Top Cat" in the West River. When Rusty became an adult, she became very feisty and wouldn't back down from any fight. Pretty much like her owner. Rusty was the "Runt of the Litter". There were 5 kittens to the litter and 4 of them were red/orange like Rusty. Rusty was only about 4 weeks old when she came to the West River, and was just eating solid food.
Dad & Rusty
As you can see by this picture, Rusty became my Dad's cat and she from this point on would never want for anything. Dad would let no harm come to her. When it rained, she could go in and out as much as she wanted and be dried off with a nice clean towel everytime. Much to the disapproval of Mum. My Dad loved this cat and if you were fortunate enough to wake up early in the morning, you would hear my Dad talking to Rusty and you would swear she was answering him back. After my Dad passed away, I think Rusty missed her mornings with him. She was very much my Dad's cat

Sometimes a picture speaks a thousand words. I can only imagine if Rusty could speak what choice words she would be saying to my Dad when he took this picture. I don't know how many times it took for my Dad to get Rusty to stay put on the old step ladder, but he kept at it until Rusty stayed for her picture.
Rusty In A Cranky Mood

J.J.
The only critter Rusty liked that wasn't human was the Neighbor's dog J.J. Rusty and J.J. grew up together, so there was that familiarity from being a kitten and puppy. J.J. and Rusty had a game they liked to play. Rusty would come over and torment J.J. to the point he would chase her. Rusty could run faster than J.J. so she would stop running long enought for J.J. to catch up to her then she would be off again.

Rusty a very much an outdoors cat. When the weather was nice, she hated to be in. Dad would let her out in the morning and this would be the last you saw of her until she decided it was time to come home for the evening. As the years went by, Rusty started to stay in more and by looking at the picture to the right you can tell she was just as happy to sleep the days away in the later years. This picture was taken not too long before Rusty passed away. It was hard for me to have to put Rusty to sleep. It was only myself now as Mum died three months before. Rusty was getting sick, and I was moving to Halifax. Taking her to Halifax would have been too much for her. Her breathing was getting very laboured and she was beginning to show the years of time for a cat. It was one of the hardest things to do, and to this day, I still miss her. Rusty died in July of 1989. I still remember the day like it was yesterday. It was a nice warm Summer day in July.
